چکیده

1. Adult size and development time are the outcomes of growth and differentiation throughout the life of an individual organism – its developmental trajectory. Correlations among ages and sizes across different life stages may influence both direct and indirect components of selection on body size and age during development. 2. We used two field studies in experimental gardens in fall and summer to evaluate phenotypic selection on size and age across larval, pupal and adult stages in the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, and how this may vary across seasons. 3. Rapid larval development was positively associated with survival to pupation and adulthood, in part because it allowed escape from larval parasitoids. Larval mortality owing to parasitoids was greater in the fall than in the summer. Egg production was positively correlated with adult mass, but not with development time. 4. Principal component analyses of size and age throughout development showed that adult size and development time were not negatively correlated, contrary to life-history expectations. As a result, selection favouring larger adult size (via female reproduction) and selection favouring rapid larval development (via juvenile survival) do not act in opposition in this system. 5. We discuss the physiological mechanisms that may underlie the independence of adult size and early larval development for holometabolous insects, and the implications for selection on body size and developmental trajectories.

Host plant quality, selection history and trade-offs shape the immune responses of Manduca sexta.

Immune defences are an important component of fitness. Yet susceptibility to pathogens is common, suggesting the presence of ecological and evolutionary limitations on immune defences. Here, we use structural equation modelling to quantify the direct effects of resource quality and selection history, and their indirect effects mediated via body condition prior to an immune challenge on encapsul...

Variation in growth and instar number in field and laboratory Manduca sexta.

The tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta has been an important model system for understanding physiological control of growth, development and metamorphosis of insects for more than half a century. Like all Manduca, M. sexta typically has five larval instars, with developmental commitment to metamorphosis occurring early in the 5th (final) instar. Here we show that M. sexta from a field population in...

Direct peptide profiling of lateral cell groups of the antennal lobes of Manduca sexta reveals specific composition and changes in neuropeptide expression during development.

The paired antennal lobes are the first integration centers for odor information in the insect brain. In the sphinx moth Manduca sexta, like in other holometabolous insects, they are formed during metamorphosis. To further understand mechanisms involved in the formation of this particularly well investigated brain area, we performed a direct peptide profiling of a well defined cell group (the l...

Environmental dependence of thermal reaction norms: host plant quality can reverse the temperature-size rule.

The temperature-size rule, a form of phenotypic plasticity in which decreased temperature increases final size, is one of the most widespread patterns in biology, particularly for ectotherms. Identifying the environmental conditions in which this pattern is reversed is key to understanding the generality of the rule. We use wild and domesticated populations of the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta...

Developmental changes in the density of ionic currents in antennal-lobe neurons of the sphinx moth, Manduca sexta.

Early in metamorphic adult development, action potentials elicited from Manduca sexta antennal lobe neurons are small in amplitude, long in duration, and calcium dependent. As development proceeds, the action potential waveform becomes larger in amplitude, shorter in duration, and increasingly sodium dependent. Whole cell voltage-clamp analysis of Manduca antennal-lobe neurons in vitro has been...
